The Practice, Prospect House has plenty of free parking directly behind the building. You need to allow about 45 minutes to an hour for your initial consultation.
When you first arrive you will be asked to fill in a new patient registration form (if you haven't done online it already).
The purpose of your first visit with the chiropractor is to discuss your health goals and see if chiropractic is likely to help you. If it looks promising, a thorough examination will help identify the cause of your problem.
This will begin by first talking with you, not only about your immediate problem, medical history, any accidents you have been involved in but also about your family history, dietary habits, other care you may have had (chiropractic, osteopathic, medical, etc.), your job, and other questions designed to help determine the nature of your condition and the best way to go about treating it. These facts will help in the interpretation of your examination findings.
The history is then followed by a careful chiropractic structural physcial examination, paying particular attention to your spine to detect any misalignments, fixations or other abnormalities.
The following may also be used to diagnose your problem: - Standard orthopaedic and neurological tests
- Observation of posture to assess biomechanical asymmetries & stresses
- Examination of individual joints & muscles
- X-rays or imaging (when clinically necessary)
Once the history & exam have been completed your chiropractor will explain their findings and explain your condition to you in detail but in a language you will understand. The chiropractor will explain the diagnosis and the course of treatment which is most appropriate. Before you commit to starting, it is important that all you questions have been answered and that you have a good understanding of your problem.
If it is decided that your condition will respond to chiropractic care, then upon your consent “manipulations” or adjustments will usually begin. Adjustments consist of unlocking the spinal segments that do not move properly or are not functioning normally within their normal range of motion. To do this, the chiropractor will generally apply a gentle force by hand in a corrective manner to the affected spinal area.
In addition to spinal adjustive techniques, soft tissue techniques such as deep tissue massage, dietary and nutritional advice, physical therapies, and lifestyle modification programs are commonly employed. Your first visit will likely be followed by subsequent less time consuming treatment visits.
